Piping Field Inspections

Performing periodic inspections is an important part of prolonging power piping safety, reliability, efficiency, and profitability. A key objective is the targeted and judicious use of inspection resources to detect damage in plant piping systems. Although the focus is on large-bore or high-energy piping, also known as "Covered Piping Systems" according to ASME, the overall condition of the piping including smaller bore lines should also be verified.

Piping Field Inspections

Piping at a power plant is a critical element in assuring safe and reliable operation.  The major difference between it and other elements such as a boiler/HRSG, steam turbine or gas turbine is that is distributed over a large area, is comprised of many subcomponents, installed and welded on site, with a design that is generally customized for a particular plant.

Depending on function, the piping is susceptible to a variety of damage mechanisms, such as

  • High-Temperature Steam Piping: Creep, Fatigue, Degraded P/T 91, Weld Defects...
  • Attemperator Piping: Quench cracking, dissimilar metal welds...
  • Feedwater and Attemperator Piping: FAC and Erosion ...
  • Piping Fixtures: HT drain cracking and wear, valve nozzle cracks...
  • CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation)

Pipe Stress Analysis

Pipe Stress Analysis

Analyzing stresses in as-found piping runs is at times required, particularly if the configuration has changed due to modifications or repairs since the original construction, or if there have been transient events that have affected the piping layout.
