ASME B31.1 Covered Piping Systems (CPS) Program

Ensuring Safety, Reliability, and Efficiency

ASME expanded the B31.1 Power Piping Code to include guidance and requirements for all plants on the following:

  • Maintain and use O&M procedures
  • Conduct regularly scheduled Condition Assessments (including regularly scheduled hanger walkdowns)
  • Maintain design, operating and inspection/repair records,
  • Conduct failure analysis for all failures in covered piping systems
  • Utilize qualified personnel for O&M work and
  • Document the details (including NDE inspections, engineering analysis and corrective actions) following all dynamic transients (waterhammer, steamhammer, seismic events.)

Further guidance is available in Chapter VII of the ASME B31.1 code.

Tetra Engineering can help plants manage these requirements and develop a Covered Piping Systems (CPS) Program.

For this Tetra Engineering developed PipeVue to store and organize large amounts of inspection data in one network-based solution, easily accessible for both plant operators as well as engineers planning yearly inspections. Using a 3-D model, PipeVue keeps track of the reported condition of different piping components in the steam cycle, helping plants to achieve a ASME B31.1 compliant Power Piping Management Programme.

PipeVue 2.0 has three modules covering:

  • Pipe Hangers & Supports
  • Flow-accelerated Corrosion inspection data
  • Grade 91 Weld inspection data.

The software satisfies ASME B31.1 Covered Piping Systems (CPSs) condition reporting requirements.
